Embracing the mess storage unit, 2022

The Embrace the mess storage unit is a phenomenology project based on accepting our mess and rejecting minimalism. The EMT is an emotional answer to accumulation in opposition to minimalism. It highlights our relationship with mess by exploring how we interact with clutter.

This storage system holds what you cherish on a pedestal, blurred, the mess becomes a unit of calming blue. Its modular design allows for different configurations, its manipulation reflecting the spreading out of the creative process. The user is welcome to organise, add, replace, invent, explore and display their mess ad infinitum and embrace it.

EMBRACE THE MESS, REJECT ORDER

EMBRACE THE MESS, REJECT ORDER

“I am messy. I accumulate objects; my room is layered in bits and bobs from my travels, my friends, my family...

It makes me feel safe and at home. Some would say my room is a shrine to messiness, which it is, but why is it a 'bad thing? Well, it's the modernist minimalist whispering this dogma to me, a dogma that is set in principles laid down by an authority as incontrovertibly true. Minimalism and its actors have become heroes of this vendetta against messiness; we 'should' want less but yet consume more. Though I always want more while consuming less.

I aim to explore our relationship with messiness, why we hate, why we love, and how to portray it most honestly. For then argue the values and flaws of modern minimalism (spoiler it's fascism) compared to the worst and the best of mess. Transparency as a means to make the mess sublime and what it can represent.”
